CONCEPTION of the comprehensive target program "Grid-infrastructure and Grid Technologies for Scientific and Applied Applications"


The Ukrainian National Grid (UNG) is unique research e-infrastructure of the national level where integrated 39 resource centres of the scientific organizations of Ukraine (29 belong NAS of Ukraine).  Basis of UNG are 12 resource centres which coordinated by the national operational center (NGI_UA) and  integrated  into the European space.  The Ukrainian grid-infrastructure is working 24 hours for day, 7 days for a week, providing an open entry to computing resources and data storage resources for research virtual organizations.  Thanks to integration into the European grid-infrastructure the UNG provides possibility of carrying out general researches with the international research organizations with uses of the European resources.

During the  course of performance  of the state program and the program of informatization of NAS of Ukraine, the creation of communication & resource of structure of AMOD (the academic network of data exchange) as powerful network of fiber-optical channels of communication  between academic institutions and grid-clusters are completed as a whole.  The majority of clusters are connected by fiber-optical channels of data exchange with handling capacity from 300 to 1000 Mbps, the 7 most powerful clusters have channels with a speed of 10 Gbps.  Uses of the constructed grid-infrastructure and opportunities of the distributed calculations at institutes of NAS of Ukraine allowed to receive a number of important scientific results in a high energy physics and astrophysics, life sciences, applied medicine, Earth sciences, nanophysics and a nanoelectronics, in materials science and so forth.

Grid technologies are effective in many areas of fundamental and applied science, their implementation allows to receive many interesting results which couldn't be received in other way. It is important to note that grid technologies in NAS of Ukraine during accomplishment academic (2006-2009r. ) and state  programs of grid technologies (2010-2013) are successfully  developed.


Substantiation of need to execute the program

According to strategy of development of the information society of Ukraine developed by Cabinet council in 2013, the formation of modern information infrastructure which provides the creation and use of supercomputer systems, the software and hardware tools, telecommunication networks and the grid- and cloud-systems and promotion of other perspective technologies are main tasks.

Implementation of such strategy will provide high-quality access to computing services, handling of large volumes of various data in spheres of information, education, science, medicine.

Start of the new program is necessary as from the point of view of development of fundamental and applied science in Ukraine, so and considering of strategic objective of a state policy in the relation of Eurointegration.

The European Commission in the Horizon program - 2020 set the task to integrate the all existing research infrastructures and scientists of Europe by means of e-infrastructure in single digital research area. Therefore Ukraine will be  to continue and to strengthen integration of the Ukrainian and European information and research area.

The further development of grid-infrastructure and grid society need integrated and targeted approach and the focus of efforts on the decision, first of all, of following problems (that not completely decided, or new that arose recently):

  1. To increase of capacity and quality of grid-infrastructure by the development of existing computing grid-clusters, the creations of the national catalog of services, the requirements satisfaction of users.
  2. To increase the handling capacity of channels of data exchange, to increase the computing capacity of the resource centers and distributed resources of data storage of grid-infrastructure; to create the national pool of resources and to implement the allocation model of resources which are provided by the resource centers; to develop the  "cloudy" technologies and to create the integrated "cloud" of UNG. It will give the opportunity for distributed testing of new technologies, which  are developing  the national and European grid societies.
  3. To create the flexible virtual research environment, with the simplified access to the UNG resources.  To ensure the interoperability of platforms and workflows in such environment with the European platforms for general use of the distributed databanks. To carry out the  actual researches in collaboration with scientists of other countries who use developed platforms, workflows and applications.  To adapt the standards of e-infrastructure developed and accepted by the European community.
  4. To ensure the training of specialists and to create the conditions and interaction mechanisms between researchers and IT-collaborations in projects with different countries. To create and support the virtual national center of competence and its interaction with the centre of competence EGI.

The integrated and targeted program of "Grid-infrastructure and grid-technologies for science and applied research in NAS of Ukraine" will be directed on the solution of these problems.


Purpose and main tasks of the Program.

The purposes of the program are the further development of grid technologies and area expansion of their application in scientific and applied researches in NAS of Ukraine, the development and deployment of new hardware and software methods and means of high-productive scientific computing, which are ensuring participation of scientists of NAS of Ukraine in the international grid-projects and the organizations.

The main directions and priority tasks of the Program for 2014-2016 will be:

1. Development of  the material base of grid technologies and high-productive computing and their applications in scientific and practical researches. In particular, they are:

- to support and develop the basic coordination centre, as federate and coordinating body of National grid);

- to develop the resource centres (grid-sites), to create the resource of storages of data, to support and develop the Resource center of data exchange;

- to create the integrated infrastructure for the distributed computings which consists of traditional grid-infrastructure and cloud infrastructure with possibility of providing the convenient access interface for users to the various information&computing resources and the productivity improvement of their use;

-  to develop the catalog of the UNG universal services and to implement the computing service-oriented  for creation of the application software by the composition and orchestrating of separate services;

- to ensure the handling capacity of fiber-optic  communication channels  at least 1 Gbps between the resource centers  and to increase the handling capacity of fiber-optic communication channels between domestic and foreign grid-nodes the according to requirements of the European network GEANT -3;

- to develop and to support the complex system of information security of National grid;

- to  integrate systemically the UNG to the European infrastructure, including the PRACE network supercomputers, EUDAT repository, the EGI Federated Cloud for scientific and innovative researches.

2. Application of grid technologies in basic researches and support of virtual organizations will have to following thematic directions:

- physics and astrophysics of high energies, astronomy;

- molecular and cellular biology and genetics, life sciences;

- physics of materials science, nano- physics and nanomaterials;

- geophysics, meteorology, climatology, Earth sciences;

- socioeconomic sciences, other directions of scientific activities.

3. The use of grid technologies and supporting of corresponding VOs in the applied sphere will carried out, in particular:

-  the applied medicine (in cooperation with National academy of medical sciences of  Ukraine).  It includes the development and deployment of the European systems of handling of images and modeling for diagnostic systems of neurodegenerate diseases, the consolidation of the distributed medical bases of diagnostic data in single system for scientific and clinical trials;

- the engineering computings, in particular, it includes the development and deployment of an interdisciplinary platform of engineering collective designing in grid/cloud environment;

- the eco monitoring, remote sensing, forecasting of the natural phenomena.

 4. The training of specialists to grid technologies and to cloud computing includes:

-  the courses creation of digital science in country higher education institutions, the   developing of theoretical minimum of discipline and   quality standard;

- the developing of remote system of  the training and increase of qualification in digital science;

- the creation of the virtual center of competence which is integrated into the virtual center EGI of competence for transfer and an exchange of knowledges and skills of the use of grid-and cloud- infrastructure for handling of large volumes of data.


Expected results of the Program.

Support of work and permanent upgrade of computing capacity and opportunities of data storage of Ukrainian grid-infrastructure will be provided. The high-capacity of computing and resource centers will be created.

The latest technologies for economical and effective use of resources (updating of grid middleware, virtualization of resources and cloudy technologies, an entrance to the international platforms of provision of resources) will be implemented.

The stable and high-quality work of the Basic coordination center which exercises activities control of national grid-infrastructure , provides services and technical assistance of the general public of users, distributes information on the latest developments of grid technologies and possibility of their applications will be ensured.

Effective coordination of fundamental and applied researches which need high-productive calculations and handling of big data will be provided.

The cooperation with international grid-and cloud- platforms, and the creation  of conditions for integration into the world research space, expansion of participation in world and  European projects will be expanded.

The virtual national center of competence of digital science and provision of information services to national and international researchers and their collaborations will be created.

Preparation and retraining of specialists and users of grid technologies will be provided.
